Biographical Note

Albert Palmer Pitkin was born in East Hartford, Conn. in 1829. He married Jane Hastings of Hartford in 1851. They had three sons: Albert H., Howard S., and William T. Jane died in 1876. He married his second wife, Louise Goodwin of Hartford, in 1880. Pitkin died at his home in Hartford on February 21, 1892.

As a young man Pitkin was employed by Gilbert & Cowles, tinners and furnace makers, of Hartford and later by Culvers of New York, the leading furnace manufacturer at the time. He returned to Hartford in 1840 and with D. L. Bidwell formed the partnership of Bidwell, Pitkin & Co. In 1858, he formed the partnership N.T. Pitkin & Co. with his brother. Those two firms merged to become Pitkin Brothers & Co. Pitkin was also a director of the Farmers and Mechanics' Bank, member of the Board of Water Commissioners from 1860 to 1871, and at the time of his death a director of the Hartford Light and Power Company, which he helped to found.

Pitkin published, Pitkin Family of America: A Genealogy of the Descendents of William Pitkin in 1887. For this accomplishment he was conferred membership in the Harleian Society of Blackheath, Kent, England. Pitkin also belonged to the Connecticut Historical Society, Putnam Phalanx, and Free Masons.
