Scope and Content
The collection contains three series, manuscripts, correspondence (1896-1910), and photographs. The manuscripts series includes copies of materials submitted for publication such as articles, poems, short stories and related correspondence. The majority of these materials are in very poor condition. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent and documents the editorial process. The final series is comprised of photographs and glass plate negatives. Not all of the images in this series were published in the magazine and the quality of the images varies greatly. A majority of the images having been touched up by magazine staff to increase the contrast or have crop lines indicating where the publisher cut the picture off in the final printed version.

Restrictions on Access
Due to their weight and fragile nature, the glass plate negatives are only available to the public with permission from the State Archives staff. Additional instruction (i.e. handling) will be provided before they may be accessed. Whenever possible, we recommend the photograph prints or original magazine images be used for research purposes.

Historical Note
The Connecticut Magazine, described itself as "Incorporated under the laws of Connecticut for the purpose of collecting in permanent form the various phases of history, literature, art, science, genius, industry and all that pertains to the maintenance of the honorable record which this state has attained," in its company letterhead. The Connecticut Magazine was the successor to Connecticut Quarterly (1895-1898). In its day the Connecticut Quarterly described itself as dedicated to "showing the manner of life and the attainment thereof in the commonwealth of a diligent people." Both magazines included photographs, drawings, poems, reminiscences, stories, and historical articles. The Connecticut Magazine appears to have ceased publication after volume 12, number 3 in 1908. The editor at that time, Francis T. Miller, was the publisher of another periodical, The Journal of American History1, which continued until 1935.

Provenance
In 1974 Library Staff partially processed the collection but was unable to determine when the materials came to the State Library and who transferred/donated the collection. The collection was reprocessed and re-housed in 2001. Additional investigation did not provide any provenance information.
