Biographical Note

Captain Alonzo Baldwin Dewey was born on April 14, 1803 to Israel Dewey and Betsey Baldwin in Berlin, Vermont. Alonzo was a farmer in Brookfield, Vermont; moved to Fulton County, Illinois in 1837, then to McDonough County, and was living with his sons in Russell, Russell County, Kansas in 1884. He was captain of the 3rd Regiment, 1st Brigade, in Berlin, Vermont, from 1825-1828. On October 30, 1832, he married Emeline Washburn. Alonzo Baldwin Dewey died in Farmer City, Illinois on March 20, 1891.1

Genealogy

Alonzo Baldwin Dewey and Emeline Washburn were married October 30, 1832 and had five sons and one daughter. Edwin Alonzo Dewey, son of Alonzo and Emeline, was born on November 7, 1836 and married Delphina Lautz on May 12, 1864. Edwin and Delphina had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Mary Estella (Dewey) Seevers, daughter of Edwin and Delphina, was born June 27, 1871 and married Joseph Morton Seevers on October 26, 1887. Mary and Joseph had a daughter Delphina Seevers Warnkin.

Acquisition Information

The letters were donated to the Connecticut State Library by Oren "Skip" Stembel on behalf of Delphina Seevers Warnkin on August 27, 2014.

Alternative Form Available

Transcripts of four letters completed by Oren "Skip" Stembel are included in the collection but have not been verified for accuracy by the State Archives. The collection also includes two digital video discs containing scanned images of the letters except for three letters which were too fragile to scan.
