Historical Note

The Connecticut Council of Churches and Religious Education was formed "to promote and extend the Christian religion in Connecticut by furnishing an interdenominational agency for cooperation in Christian education, comity, and social relations" (Constitution). The Council functions as the accredited auxiliary of The International Council of Religious Education and maintains associate relations with The Federal Council of Churches of Christ of America. It resulted from a merger in 1932 of The Connecticut Council of Religious Education and the Connecticut Federation of Churches. Hartford County Superior Court on January 22, 1948, granted an application for change of name of the organization from "The Connecticut Council of Churches and Religious Education" to "The Connecticut Council of Churches, Incorporated."

Sunday School conventions in Connecticut originated in 1857 with the first State Convention held at Hartford. Subsequently the Connecticut Association of the American Sunday School Union was formed. In 1871 the Connecticut Sunday School Teachers Association was organized which in 1886 became the Connecticut Sunday School Association. Their Executive Committee meeting minutes of April 8, 1924, state a proposed change in the name of the organization from "The Connecticut Sunday School Association" to "The Connecticut Council of Religious Education."
