Historical Note
The Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency was established as the New Britain-Bristol Regional Planning Agency by the member municipalities of Berlin, Bristol, New Britain, Plainville, Plymouth, and Southington on March 17, 1966. The name of the agency was changed to the Central Connecticut Region Planning Agency at a meeting on June 2, 1966 and the "Regional" part of the name was added on May 4, 1967. The municipality of Burlington joined the regional planning agency on April 1, 1973, although it had participated as a non-member back to 1966.
The agency on March 31, 1969 published its first Regional Development Action Plan. The plan listed 232 regional goals in 12 functional areas: culture, government, education, economy, health, housing, people-to-people communication, recreation, social services, safety, utilities and transportation. The plan was updated in 1975 to include 102 regional goals in the 12 functional areas. The agency from 1975 to 1983 focused on the following activities: plans of development, water quality planning, technical assistance to municipalities, census data, air quality planning, housing planning, review activity, solid waste management planning, regional purchasing program, transportation and transit planning, and state coordination.
The Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency has maintained multiple offices. The original office in New Britain was loaned for a week from January 23-29, 1967. The next office was loaned by the Plainville Water Company Superintendent at 17 Pierce Street in Plainville from January 30 to May 30, 1967. The agency rented its first office at 49 West Main Street, Plainville from June 1, 1967 to June 30, 1970. The office was then located at 30 Bank Street, New Britain from July 1, 1970 through June 30, 1974. The agency was then located in Bristol from July 1, 1974 to January 30, 2015.
